Founded in 2007, the Big Shoulders Fund Auxiliary Board is a group of active and altruistic young professionals dedicated to supporting the mission of the Big Shoulders Fund through volunteering, outreach and fundraising.   The Auxiliary Board raises funds for scholarships so deserving inner-city children can attend a Big Shoulders school. 

Now in its fourth year, the Big Shoulders Fund Auxiliary Board has become one of the fastest growing young professional boards in Chicago. Currently we have nearly 160 active members, who are busy hosting events, engaging volunteers as tutors, mentors and board members and building enthusiasm for the 93 inner-city Catholic schools supported by Big Shoulders through outreach to alumni groups, social networks, parishes, companies and more. These young professionals have brought an unparalleled dedication and boundless energy to the Big Shoulders mission.

In its first three years the Auxiliary Board was able to provided 27 scholarships to students at St. Viator Elementary School, Our Lady of Tepeyac Elementary School and at St. Francis De Sales High School. The Board continues to work to increase the number of scholarship available and thus during the 2009-2010 school year they will have 71 students on scholarships. These funds are raised through a required minimum contribution, and the Auxiliary Board’s two marquee events – Big Shoulders Fund Ball and Bowl for a Cause at 10pin bowling lounge.

The Auxiliary Board's young leaders are working hard to follow in the footsteps of our Board of Directors to continue the mission of the Big Shoulders Fund for generations of inner-city Catholic school students to come. These young philanthropic professionals are helping to ensure that every child has a chance to receive a quality, values based education in a safe environment so they have the opportunity to make their own dreams a reality.

WAYS TO GET INVOLVED

Tutor - Once a week commitment helping students with their class work. 

Mentor - A monthly time commitment working with students who are scholarship recipients and acting as an advisory and confidant who encourages reading.

School Board - A monthly time commitment working with a group of business professionals who act as an advisory board to a school’s leadership.  

Give Back Days - A one time commitment to  volunteer on a Saturday  morning involving a group spending three to four hours cleaning, painting, or assisting with special projects to help with the school’s physical upkeep. 

Fundraising Committee - A monthly time commitment to help plan the Auxiliary Boards two main fundraisers and develops additional ideas to generate and increase donations so the Auxiliary Board can assist additional students each school year.  

Membership Committee - A monthly time commitment to works to retain and recruit new members through outreach, relationship building and networking event planning.  

Outreach Expansion Committee - A quarterly time commitment to works to recruit new members who live in the suburbs and have families through outreach, event planning and relationship building. 

Scholarship Committee - A semi-annual time commitment to help develop scholarship criteria, choose scholars and ensure scholars are working to their potential. 

Schools Committee - A bi-monthly time commitment to help ensure all regular school volunteers are having a good experience, recruiting new volunteers, coordinating the bi-monthly service days, aiding mentors in connecting with their scholars and creating meaningful ways for Auxiliary Board members to interact with Big Shoulders Fund schools and their scholars.

HOW TO JOIN

To become an official member of the Auxiliary Board, simply make a minimum $50 annual donation to Big Shoulders by sending your annual membership donation to:

Donation checks should be made payable to the Big Shoulders Fund. Please write: Auxiliary Board on the memo line of your check.
